James Hillyer (born March 23, 1928 – died February 19, 1991) was an American football coach. He was known for his work with young athletes. Coach Hillyer led teams at both the high school and college levels.
He was the head football coach at Prairie View A&M University in Prairie View, Texas. He held this position for the 1971 season. His team's record at Prairie View was 3 wins and 7 losses.
Early Life and Playing Days
Jim Hillyer grew up in Corpus Christi, Texas. He went to Solomon Coles High School. There, he was a star in both football and basketball.
After high school, he played college football. He was a fullback for Samuel Huston College. This school is now known as Huston–Tillotson University.
Coaching Career
Coach Hillyer started his coaching career at the high school level. He was the head football coach at Dunbar High School in Lubbock, Texas. He coached there for seven seasons. His teams had a very impressive record of 51 wins, 6 losses, and 5 ties.
Later, he moved to college coaching. In 1970, he became an assistant coach at Prairie View A&M University. The next year, in 1971, he took over as the head coach for the Prairie View A&M Panthers football team.
