James Charles McElroy Jr. (born October 4, 1953) is an American former professional basketball player. He was born in Cotton Plant, Arkansas. He played as a guard in the National Basketball Association (NBA) from 1975 to 1982.

Early Life and College Basketball

Jim McElroy grew up in Detroit, Michigan. He went to Murray–Wright High School. After high school, he played college basketball. He first played for Monroe County Community College from 1971 to 1973.

Later, he played for Central Michigan University from 1973 to 1975. While at Central Michigan, he was a very good player. He was named to the First-team All-MAC in 1975. He was also on the Second-team All-MAC in 1974. His jersey number, 14, was later retired by Central Michigan. This is a special honor for great players.

Professional Basketball Career

Jim McElroy was chosen in the 1975 NBA draft. The New Orleans Jazz picked him in the third round. He was the 38th player chosen overall. He started his professional career with the Jazz in 1975.

Playing for the Jazz

McElroy played for the New Orleans Jazz from 1975 to 1979. He was a shooting guard, which means he was good at scoring points. During his time with the Jazz, he showed his skills as a player. In the 1978–79 NBA season, he was one of the top players for total assists. He ranked tenth in the entire league that season.

Moving to Other Teams

In 1979, Jim McElroy joined the Detroit Pistons. He played for them for part of the season. Later in 1979, he moved to the Atlanta Hawks. He played for the Hawks until 1982, when his professional career ended.
