James Ivory Thaxton, born on January 11, 1949, is a former American professional football player. He played as a tight end for five seasons in the National Football League (NFL). His teams included the San Diego Chargers, Cleveland Browns, New Orleans Saints, and St. Louis Cardinals. The Chargers chose him in the fourth round of the 1973 NFL draft. He also played college football at Tennessee State University.

James Ivory Thaxton was born on January 11, 1949. His hometown was Brownsville, Tennessee. He went to George Washington Carver High School. This school is located in Memphis, Tennessee.
Playing for Tennessee State University
Thaxton was a part of the Tennessee State Tigers football team. He played for them from 1969 to 1972. He earned a "letter" for playing well in 1970, 1971, and 1972. Being a letterman means he was a key player for three years.
He was recognized as an All-American player. The Pittsburgh Courier newspaper gave him this honor in both 1971 and 1972. Black Mutual also named him an All-American in 1972.
Professional NFL Career Highlights
Thaxton began his professional football career in 1973. He was chosen by the San Diego Chargers in the 1973 NFL draft. He was the 84th player picked overall in the fourth round.
Time with the San Diego Chargers
In his first year, 1973, he played in ten games for the Chargers. He started three of those games. He caught seven passes for 119 yards. He also scored two touchdowns. In 1974, he played in two games for the Chargers. He did not record any statistics that year.
Moving to the Cleveland Browns

Brief Stint with the Oakland Raiders
