James Ivory Thaxton (born January 11, 1949) is a former American football player. He played as a tight end and wide receiver in the National Football League (NFL). Jim Thaxton played for five seasons with teams like the San Diego Chargers, Cleveland Browns, New Orleans Saints, and St. Louis Cardinals. He was chosen by the Chargers in the 1973 NFL draft. Before joining the NFL, he played college football at Tennessee State University.

Jim Thaxton's Early Life and College Years

James Ivory Thaxton was born on January 11, 1949, in Brownsville, Tennessee. He grew up and went to George Washington Carver High School in Memphis, Tennessee.

After high school, Thaxton played college football for the Tennessee State Tigers football team. He was part of the team from 1969 to 1972. He was a "letterman" for three years, from 1970 to 1972. Being a letterman means he played well enough to earn a special award, often a letter "T" for Tennessee State.

Jim Thaxton was recognized as an All-American player. This means he was considered one of the best college football players in the country. He earned this honor from the Pittsburgh Courier in both 1971 and 1972. He was also named an All-American by Black Mutual in 1972.

Jim Thaxton's NFL Career

Jim Thaxton began his professional football journey when the San Diego Chargers picked him in the 1973 NFL draft. He was the 84th player chosen overall in the fourth round.

Playing for the San Diego Chargers

In his first year, 1973, Thaxton played in ten games for the Chargers. He started three of those games. During this season, he caught seven passes for 119 yards. He also scored two touchdowns. In 1974, he played in two more games for the Chargers.

Time with the Cleveland Browns

On September 24, 1974, Jim Thaxton was traded to the Cleveland Browns. He played in 12 games for the Browns that year, starting four times. He caught four passes for 71 yards. He also made one interception and recovered one fumble.

Short Time with the Oakland Raiders

In 1975, Thaxton was traded again, this time to the Oakland Raiders. However, he was released by the Raiders before the season started, on August 19, 1975.

Joining the New Orleans Saints

Thaxton then signed with the New Orleans Saints in 1976. He played in 11 games for the Saints that year, starting one. He caught seven passes for 112 yards and scored one touchdown. He also returned eight kickoffs for a total of 185 yards. In 1977, he played in all 14 games for the Saints and started six of them. He caught 14 passes for 211 yards and scored another touchdown.

Final Season with the St. Louis Cardinals

On August 27, 1978, Thaxton was traded to the St. Louis Cardinals. He played in five games for the Cardinals in 1978. In his final NFL season, he caught three passes for 31 yards and scored one touchdown.
