James Carr Walton (born June 7, 1948) is an American businessman. He is known for being an heir to the huge fortune of Walmart, which is the world's largest retail company. As of December 2024, Jim Walton was one of the richest people on Earth. He is the youngest son of Sam Walton, who started Walmart.
Early Life and Family
Jim Walton was born in Newport, Arkansas. He was the third child of Walmart co-founder Sam Walton and Helen Walton. His siblings are Rob Walton, Alice Walton, and John Walton.
Jim went to Bentonville High School and graduated in 1965. While there, he was president of his junior class. He also played football at a high level and learned how to fly a plane. After high school, he went to the University of Arkansas. In 1971, he earned a degree in Business Administration with a focus on Marketing.
In 1972, Jim Walton started working for Walmart. He helped with the company's real estate deals. After four years, he moved to Walton Enterprises in 1975. This is a company owned by his family, and he became its president.
His Career and Wealth
On September 28, 2005, Jim Walton joined the Walmart Board of Directors. He took the place of his brother, John, who had passed away.
Jim was the CEO (Chief Executive Officer) of his family's company, Arvest Bank. Later, he became the Chairman of Arvest Bank. He is also the chairman of Community Publishers Inc. (CPI). This is a newspaper company that his father, Sam Walton, started. These companies operate in Arkansas, Missouri, and Oklahoma.
From 2008 to 2013, Jim Walton and his siblings promised to give about $2 billion to the Walton Family Foundation. This foundation helps many different causes.
In September 2016, reports showed that Jim Walton owned more than 152 million shares of Walmart. These shares were worth over $11 billion (US dollars) at that time. His wealth has grown a lot over the years. For example, in 2014, he was ranked among the top 10 richest people in the world. By December 2024, his net worth was estimated to be around $109.5 billion.
Personal Life
Jim Walton is married to Lynne McNabb Walton. They have four children: Alice A. "Annie" Proietti, Steuart Walton, Thomas Layton "Tom" Walton, and James M. Walton. The Walton family lives in Bentonville, Arkansas.
