James Boyd Greenspoon (born February 7, 1948 – died March 11, 2015) was an American musician. He played the keyboard and wrote music. He was most famous for being a member of the popular band Three Dog Night.

Growing Up and Learning Music
Jimmy Greenspoon was born in Los Angeles, California. He grew up in Beverly Hills. His mom, Mary O'Brian, was an actress in silent movies. She encouraged him to start piano lessons when he was seven.
Jimmy went to Beverly Hills High School. Some of his classmates were famous people like Richard Dreyfuss and Bonnie Franklin. He also became good friends with Michael Lloyd, who later became a music producer.
In 1963, Jimmy and Michael had their first hit song. It was with a surf music group called The New Dimensions. Jimmy also studied music at the Los Angeles Conservatory of Music. He had one daughter named Heather.
Jimmy's Music Career
Jimmy Greenspoon played and recorded music with many famous artists. These included Linda Ronstadt, Eric Clapton, and Jimi Hendrix. He also worked with bands like America and The Beach Boys.
In the 1960s, Jimmy played with groups like Sound of the Seventh Son. He performed at famous clubs on the Sunset Strip. These clubs included The Trip and The Whiskey.
In 1966, Jimmy moved to Denver, Colorado. He formed a group called Superband there. In 1968, he moved back to Los Angeles. That's where he met Danny Hutton and helped form the band Three Dog Night.
Other Projects
Besides playing in Three Dog Night, Jimmy Greenspoon also worked on other projects. He was a consultant for the Murry-Wood Foundation. He also wrote original music for several movies. These films included United 93, Hellboy, and Die Hard. He often worked with composer Neil Argo.
Special Recognition
In 2000, Jimmy Greenspoon received a special honor. A Golden Palm Star was placed on the Palm Springs Walk of Stars in Palm Springs, California. This star celebrates his achievements in music.
Later Life
In 2014, Jimmy Greenspoon was diagnosed with a type of cancer called melanoma. He stopped touring with Three Dog Night because of his illness. He passed away from cancer on March 11, 2015. He was 67 years old.
