James Lee Newberry (born June 9, 1919 – died June 23, 1983) was a talented baseball player. People often called him "Schoolboy" because he was a smart player. He was a pitcher, which is the player who throws the ball to the batter. Jimmy Newberry played in the Negro Leagues in the United States. He also played in the Japanese Pacific League.

Jimmy Newberry played baseball professionally from 1944 to 1956. He played for several teams during his career. In the United States, he played for the Cincinnati Clowns. He also played for the Birmingham Black Barons in the Negro American League.
Playing with a Legend
While playing for the Birmingham Black Barons, Jimmy Newberry was teammates with a very famous player. This player was Willie Mays, who was quite young at the time. The team's manager, Piper Davis, asked most of the players to help look after young Willie.

Jimmy Newberry made history in baseball. He and John Britton were among the first African-American players to join a Japanese baseball team. This was a big step for baseball and for players from different backgrounds. Jimmy Newberry played for the Hankyu Braves in Japan.
