Jjigae (찌개, pronounced 'jee-gay') is a super popular Korean dish. It's a lot like a thick, hearty stew. There are many yummy kinds of jjigae to try!
People make jjigae with tasty ingredients like meat, seafood, or fresh vegetables. These are cooked in a flavorful broth. The broth often gets its special taste from gochujang (a spicy chili paste), doenjang (a savory soybean paste), or ganjang. Jjigae is often seasoned with red chili pepper and served bubbling hot.
Almost every Korean meal includes either a jjigae or a guk (국), which is a type of soup. Long ago, during the Joseon Dynasty in Korea, jjigae was known by a different name: jochi.
What is Jjigae?
Jjigae is a warm, comforting dish that's perfect for sharing. It's usually cooked in a pot and brought right to the table. This way, it stays hot while you eat! It's thicker than a regular soup but thinner than a very thick stew.
Different Kinds of Jjigae
There are many different kinds of jjigae. They are often named after their main ingredient. For example:
- Saengseon jjigae (생선찌개) is made with saengseon, which means fish.
- Dubu jjigae (두부찌개) uses dubu, which is tofu.
- Kimchi jjigae is made with kimchi, a famous Korean fermented cabbage.
- Sundubu jjigae is made with very soft, uncurdled tofu.
Each type of jjigae has its own unique flavor and ingredients. This makes them all special and delicious!
