Jon "Jo" Nesbø (born 29 March 1960) is a famous Norwegian writer and musician. He was also a football player and reporter.

Jo Nesbø is known for his exciting crime novels. His most famous character is Inspector Harry Hole. Nesbø is also the lead singer and songwriter for the Norwegian rock band Di Derre. He has sold over 50 million books around the world. This makes him Norway's most successful author ever. His books have been translated into more than 50 languages.

Many of his books have been made into movies or TV shows. For example, the 2011 film Headhunters is based on his novel Hodejegerne.

Early Life and Education

Jo Nesbø was born in 1960 in Oslo, Norway. He grew up in a town called Molde. He studied economics and business at the Norwegian School of Economics. Before he became a writer, he worked as a journalist and a stockbroker.

Writing Career

Jo Nesbø has written several popular book series and stand-alone novels.

The Harry Hole Series

The Harry Hole series follows a tough detective named Harry Hole. He works for the police in Norway. His investigations often take him to other countries.

These novels are full of suspense and action. Harry Hole often faces dangerous situations. A film called The Snowman was made from one of these books in 2017. It starred Michael Fassbender. A TV show based on Harry Hole, called Jo Nesbø's Detective Hole, started filming in Oslo in 2024.

The Doctor Proctor Series

Jo Nesbø also writes fun books for children. The Doctor Proctor series is about a crazy professor named Doctor Proctor. He is waiting for his big invention to become famous. His friends, Lisa and Nilly, help him. The books are set in Oslo.

In one book, Doctor Proctor invents a special bathtub. This bathtub lets people travel through time! There are 5 books in this series. Some of these books have been made into movies in Norway and Germany.

The Olav Johansen Series

This series features a character named Olav Johansen. He works for a crime boss in Oslo. In the book Blood on Snow, Olav falls in love with his boss's wife. The problem is, his boss has hired him to kill her!

The books Blood on Snow and Midnight Sun: Blood on Snow 2 were published in 2015. There are plans to make these books into movies. A film based on Midnight Sun, called The Hanging Sun, was released in 2022.

Other Exciting Projects

Nesbø has written other stories that have been adapted into films.

  • In 2011, his story Twelve became the film Jackpot.
  • He also wrote a new version of William Shakespeare's play Macbeth. It was published in 2018.
  • His stand-alone novel Sønnen is also planned to become a film.

Other Work and Hobbies

Before becoming a writer, Jo Nesbø was a talented football player. He played as a striker for the team Molde FK. He had to stop playing football because of a knee injury.

Since 1992, Nesbø has been the lead singer and songwriter for the rock band Di Derre.

Jo Nesbø lives in Oslo with his daughter. He loves rock climbing. He started climbing seriously when he was 50 years old. In 2023, he reached a big goal by climbing a very difficult route.
