Early Life and Family
Joachim Ferreira was born near a place called Uitenhage in South Africa. He was the oldest child in his family. When he was just a baby, his family joined a big journey called the Great Trek. This was when many Dutch-speaking settlers moved away from British rule.
Later, Joachim Ferreira married Adriana Gertina Davel. They had one daughter together. His wife lived until 1929.
His Career as a Leader
In 1875, Ferreira and other Voortrekker families settled near Swaziland. They called their new home the Commonwealth of the Klein Vrystaat. Around the same time, the Swazi King Mbandzeni gave Ferreira and his son-in-law a large piece of land. This land was about 36,000 acres and was used for grazing animals. It was the biggest land gift to Boer settlers back then.
Fighting in the First Boer War
Joachim Ferreira became a leader during the First Boer War, which happened from 1880 to 1881. He started as the commandant, or commander, of the Utrecht commando. A commando was a group of armed citizens.
Ferreira then helped lead one of the two main Boer groups at the Battle of Majuba Hill. This important battle took place on February 27, 1881. The other Boer group was led by Stephanus Roos.
Later Actions and Second Boer War
After the First Boer War, Ferreira was involved in talks about land. He worked to transfer land east of the Lebombo Mountains to the South African Republic. However, his plans did not work out because of actions taken by Sir Charles Saunders. This land later became known as British Maputaland.
Joachim Ferreira also served as a Boer general in the Second Boer War. This war happened much later, from 1899 to 1902.
Joachim Ferreira passed away near Piet Retief on May 16, 1917.
