A Look at Joachimsthal's Past
Joachimsthal was started in 1601 by a ruler named Joachim III Frederick, Elector of Brandenburg. He built it near an old castle called Grimnitz Castle. In 1604, Joachimsthal officially became a town.
The Elector also built a glass factory here. In 1607, he opened a special boarding school called the Joachimsthalsches Gymnasium. Sadly, the school was destroyed in 1636 during a big war called the Thirty Years' War. After that, the school moved to Berlin.
In 1814, a fire damaged the town. The church and many houses had to be rebuilt. Famous architect Karl Friedrich Schinkel helped design the new buildings.
Hubertusstock Hunting Lodge
From 1815 to 1947, Joachimsthal was part of the Prussian state of Brandenburg. In 1849, King Frederick William IV of Prussia built a hunting lodge called Hubertusstock. It was on the western side of Werbellinsee lake.
This lodge became a popular place for powerful leaders. German Emperors, like Wilhelm II, used it for hunting trips. Wilhelm II even had his own train station built there! Later, presidents of the Weimar Republic, like Friedrich Ebert and Paul von Hindenburg, also visited.
In 1944, Adolf Hitler gave the lodge to one of his officers. In 1973, it was rebuilt to be a vacation home for Erich Honecker, who was a leader in East Germany.
Joachimsthal was part of different regions over the years. It was part of the State of Brandenburg from 1947 to 1952. Then, from 1952 to 1990, it was in Bezirk Frankfurt in East Germany. Since 1990, it has been part of Brandenburg again.
