Joanna Miles was born in Nice, France. Her mother, Jeanne Patterson Miles, was an American painter. Her father, Johannes Schiefer, was a French painter and art curator.
In 1941, Joanna moved to the United States. She became a US citizen. She went to The Putney School in Vermont and graduated in 1958. Later, she was accepted into the famous Actors Studio. There, she studied acting alongside future stars like Al Pacino and Dustin Hoffman.
