Joanna Miles was born in Nice, France. Her mother, Jeanne Patterson Miles, was an American painter. Her father, Johannes Schiefer, was a French painter and also an art curator. When Joanna was young, in 1941, her family moved to the United States. She became a citizen of the U.S. that same year.
