Jocelyn Bjorn Lovell (born July 19, 1950 – died June 3, 2016) was a famous Canadian cyclist. He was a top athlete in the 1970s and early 1980s. Jocelyn was great at both track cycling (racing on a special oval track) and road cycling (racing on regular roads). He won many national championships and earned gold medals at big events like the Commonwealth Games and Pan American Games. He even competed in three Olympic Games!
A Cycling Star
Jocelyn had amazing success, especially at the 1978 Commonwealth Games held in Edmonton, Canada. There, he won three gold medals, setting new Games records. Later that same year, he won a silver medal at the World Cycling Championships. This showed he was one of the best cyclists in the world.
A Life-Changing Accident
Jocelyn continued to race as an amateur cyclist into the early 1980s. However, on August 4, 1983, his life changed forever. He was in a serious accident with a dump truck while training. The accident caused a severe injury to his neck and pelvis. This injury meant he could no longer move his arms and legs easily.
Honors and Legacy
Even after his accident, Jocelyn's achievements were remembered. In 1985, he was honored by being inducted into the Canadian Sports Hall of Fame. This special place celebrates Canada's greatest athletes. Jocelyn Lovell is remembered as a determined and talented cyclist who achieved great things for his country.
