Jocelyn Sidney, 7th Earl of Leicester facts for kids

Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Jocelyn Sidney, 7th Earl of Leicester (born 1682 – died July 7, 1743) was an important British nobleman. Before 1737, people knew him as Hon. Jocelyn Sidney. He was part of a well-known family and held a special position in British society.

Who Was Jocelyn Sidney?

Jocelyn Sidney was the son of Robert Sidney, 4th Earl of Leicester and Lady Elizabeth Egerton. He went to University College at Oxford University, which is a very famous school. In February 1717, he got married to Miss Elizabeth Thomas from Glamorgan.

His Role at the Tower of London

On April 30, 1734, Jocelyn got a special job. His older brother, John Sidney, 6th Earl of Leicester, who was in charge of the Tower of London, made him the Chief Porter there. This meant he was responsible for the main entrance and security of the Tower. He kept this job until 1737.

Becoming an Earl

In 1737, Jocelyn's brother passed away. This meant Jocelyn became the new Earl of Leicester. An "Earl" is a high-ranking noble title in Britain. He held this important title until he died on July 7, 1743. When he died, the title of Earl of Leicester and another title, Viscount Lisle, ended because he didn't have any children who could legally inherit them. His wife, Elizabeth, passed away a few years later on November 14, 1747.

His Family and Legacy

Even though Jocelyn Sidney didn't have any children who could inherit his noble titles, he did have a daughter named Lady Anne Sidney. She married Henry Streatfeild in 1752. After Jocelyn's death, there was some legal discussion about who would get the family's land. In the end, Henry and Anne received money from the Sidney family's properties in Wales, which was still a good amount of money.
