Joe Buffalo is a member of the Samson Cree Nation in Alberta, Canada. He comes from a family with a history in acting. His great-grandfather, also named Joe Buffalo, was a deputy chief and acted in the 1958 film The Sheriff of Fractured Jaw. Joe is also the great-grand nephew of the well-known actor Gordon Tootoosis.

After attending a special school for Indigenous children, Joe moved to Ottawa to start his skateboarding career. He has become an important voice, helping other Indigenous people with their well-being and talking about important issues. In 2023, he was honored with the Inspire Award in the sports category for his contributions.

Joe Buffalo is connected with Colonialism Skateboards, a company owned by Indigenous people. In 2021, this company released a special skateboard model featuring Joe. The design on the skateboard shows his student identification card from the Qu'Appelle Indian Residential School. This design helps to share his story and raise awareness.
