Joseph Laurence Lynch (born July 16, 1925 – died August 1, 2001) was a famous Irish actor. He was known for his long career in both funny and serious roles. He also used his voice for cartoon characters, like in the children's show Chorlton and the Wheelies. Joe Lynch was also a talented singer and songwriter. He sang in movies and recorded popular songs like "The Whistling Gypsy".

Joe Lynch's Early Life
Joe Lynch was born in a town called Mallow in County Cork, Ireland. He went to school at the North Monastery Christian Brothers School. Before becoming a full-time actor, he had several other jobs.
Joe Lynch's Acting Career
Starting Out in Theatre and Radio
Joe Lynch began acting part-time with the Cork Shakespearean Company. He also performed at the Cork Opera House. By 1947, acting became his full-time job. He helped start the Radio Éireann Players. He appeared in many plays, including those by Teresa Deevy.
From 1967 to 1981, Joe acted on stage at the famous Abbey Theatre. In the 1950s, he had his own comedy show on Radio Éireann. It was called Living with Lynch. This was the first comedy series ever on Radio Éireann.
Television and Film Roles
Joe Lynch appeared in many popular TV shows and films. He was in the sitcom Never Mind the Quality, Feel the Width from 1968 to 1970. He also starred in its movie version in 1973.
Some of his other notable film roles included The Siege of Sidney Street (1960) and Ulysses (1967). In the 1970s, Joe often appeared as a guest on the long-running soap opera Coronation Street. He played Elsie Tanner's boyfriend.
In 1962 and again in 1977, Joe Lynch won a Jacob's Award. This award was for his excellent acting on RTÉ television.
Returning to Ireland and Glenroe
By 1979, Joe Lynch was back in Ireland. He started playing the character Dinny Byrne in the RTÉ soap opera Bracken. Later, the Dinny Byrne character moved to the very popular and long-running RTÉ soap Glenroe.
Joe Lynch eventually left Glenroe. He felt he was not being treated fairly regarding his pay and pension. He also felt that RTÉ limited his ability to take on other acting jobs.
Voice Acting Work
Joe Lynch was also a talented voice actor. He voiced the main bad guy, Grundel the Toad, in the Don Bluth animated film Thumbelina (1994). This was his last voice acting role before he passed away seven years later.
