Joseph Benjamin Strong (born September 9, 1962) is an American former professional baseball pitcher. He played for the Florida Marlins in Major League Baseball (MLB) from 2000 to 2001. Joe Strong had a long and interesting career, playing baseball in several different countries before reaching the MLB.
Joe Strong's Baseball Journey
Joe Strong went to the University of California, Riverside. He played college baseball there in 1984. Later that year, the Oakland Athletics picked him in the 15th round of the MLB draft.
Strong played for many teams around the world. He played in Taiwan for the Wei Chuan Dragons and the China Times Eagles. He also played in South Korea for the Hyundai Unicorns.
Reaching the Major Leagues
After playing in different leagues, Joe Strong signed with the Tampa Bay Devil Rays in 1999. He became a free agent and then joined the Florida Marlins in 2000.
On May 11, 2000, Joe Strong made his big debut in MLB. He was 37 years old. This made him the oldest rookie to debut in MLB in 40 years!
Memorable Moments
Joe Strong played for the Marlins in 2000 and 2001. On June 17, 2000, he earned his only MLB save. He pitched the final out in the 11th inning. This helped the Marlins win 4-3 against the Pirates.
After his time with the Marlins, Strong continued to play. In 2002, he played for the Milwaukee Brewers' Triple-A team, the Indianapolis Indians. His final season was in 2004. He played for the Camden Riversharks in an independent league.
