Joel Antônio Martins (born November 23, 1931 – died January 1, 2003), known simply as Joel, was a fantastic Brazilian football player. He was famous for playing as a winger, which is a player who runs along the sides of the field. Joel played for several big clubs and was even part of the Brazilian national team that won the 1958 FIFA World Cup.
Joel's Football Journey
Joel was born in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, on November 23, 1931. His amazing football journey started when he was just 17 years old. The famous club Botafogo found him in 1948, recognizing his talent.
Just two years later, Joel joined another big club, Flamengo. There, he helped his team win the Rio State Championship three times in a row! This was a huge achievement, happening in 1953, 1954, and 1955.
Playing for Brazil
Joel also played for the Brazilian national team from 1957 to 1961. He was part of the squad that went to the 1958 FIFA World Cup in Sweden. This was a very important tournament for Brazil, as they ended up winning it!
Joel started in the first two matches of the World Cup. However, later in the tournament, he was replaced by another legendary player, Garrincha. Similarly, his teammate from Flamengo, Dida, was replaced by the incredible Pelé. Even though he didn't play every game, Joel was still a champion with his team.
Joel's Big Wins
Joel won many important titles during his football career. Here are some of his biggest achievements:
- 1958 FIFA World Cup Champion: This is the biggest prize in international football!
- Rio State Championship: He won this three times with Flamengo in 1953, 1954, and 1955.
- Rio-São Paulo Tournament: He won this tournament in 1961.
