Joey Mantia (born February 7, 1986) is an amazing American athlete. He is famous for both inline speed skating (on wheels) and speed skating on ice. Joey has won many awards, including an Olympic bronze medal. He is also a 28-time world champion and holds several world records!

Joey won two gold medals at the 2003 Pan American Games and another gold at the 2007 Pan American Games. He was named "American Speed Skater of the Year" three times in a row, from 2005 to 2007. In 2007, he also received the Elmer Ringeisen Sportsmanship Award. In 2010, after winning two world titles in inline skating, he was ranked second for the USOC Athlete of the Month award.

As of January 7, 2010, Joey Mantia held many world records. These included records for road races over 500 meters, 10,000 meters, and 20,000 meters. He also held world records for track races over 300 meters and 15,000 meters.

Early Life and Skating Start

Joey Mantia started skating when he was young. He often called himself a "rink rat" because he loved going to the local indoor skating rink. He spent a lot of time at public skating sessions. There, he learned about speed skating by watching others practice. After trying inline speed skating, Joey decided he wanted to be the best speed skater in the world.

Joey's Speed Skating Journey

In 2010, Joey Mantia made a big change. He switched from inline speed skating to ice speed skating. First, he moved to the Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs, Colorado. Two years later, he moved to Salt Lake City, Utah. This allowed him to train with the national team.

In 2011, Joey competed in the US speed skating championships. He finished fourth in the 5000-meter race. He also placed tenth in the 1000-meter and eighth in the 1500-meter races.

World Cup Debut and First Win

In early 2013, Joey Mantia joined the World Cup competition circuit. This is a series of international races. He quickly found success. Less than a year later, in December 2013, he won gold at the Berlin World Cup. He won the 1500-meter race, beating famous skaters like Shani Davis and Denis Yuskov.

Olympic Appearances and Medals

Joey Mantia represented Team USA at the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi. He finished 15th in the 1000-meter race and 22nd in the 1500-meter race. His team also placed 7th in the team pursuit event.

In January 2018, Joey qualified for the 2018 U.S. Olympic Team again. He won both the 1000-meter and 1500-meter events. He also qualified for the mass start race.

On December 13, 2021, Joey won his second straight 1500-meter World Cup title. This happened in Salt Lake City.

His first Olympic medal was a bronze. He won it in the team pursuit event. This was with the U.S. team at the 2022 Winter Olympics in Beijing.

Personal Life and Hobbies

Joey Mantia is not just a skater. He is also an investor and owner of Coffee Lab. This is a coffee shop located on the University of Utah campus. In his free time, Joey taught himself how to play the piano.
