Playing for Clubs
Early Days at Cannes
Johan Micoud was born in Cannes, France, and grew up in Vallauris. He started his football journey in the youth system of his local club, AS Cannes.
He became the main playmaker for Cannes after Zinedine Zidane left. Micoud helped the club get promoted from the second division in 1993. The next season, they even qualified for the UEFA Cup.
Success with Bordeaux
Micoud then moved to Bordeaux. He played a key role in the team, helping them win the Ligue 1 championship in the 1998–99 season. They won the title on the very last day!
The next season, he helped Bordeaux reach the second group stage of the UEFA Champions League. He also played in two Coupe de la Ligue finals with Bordeaux. They lost to RC Strasbourg in 1997 and Paris Saint-Germain in 1998.
Time in Italy with Parma
In the summer of 2000, Micoud moved to Italy to play for Parma. He stayed there for two seasons. While at Parma, he helped the team win the Coppa Italia cup.
However, he started to lose his regular spot in the team to another player. This led to him looking for a new club.
Winning Big with Werder Bremen
In August 2002, Micoud moved to Germany and joined Werder Bremen. He played his first game for them in a 3-1 win against 1. FC Nürnberg, even scoring one of Bremen's goals.
Micoud was a very important player when Bremen surprisingly won two major titles in 2004. He scored in the game against Bayern Munich that secured the Bundesliga title for Bremen. He also scored in almost every round of the 2003–04 DFB-Pokal cup. That season, he finished with ten goals and eight assists.
After this amazing season, Micoud signed a new contract with Bremen. The club's sporting director called him 'the best midfielder in the Bundesliga.' In his last season with Bremen, Micoud scored five goals in the UEFA Champions League. He also scored eight goals and made fourteen assists in the Bundesliga, helping Bremen finish second.
Back to Bordeaux
In June 2006, at 32 years old, Micoud returned to his former club, Bordeaux. He quickly became a key player again. He scored the winning goal in his first league match back with the team.
Micoud helped Bordeaux win the League Cup in 2007. He also helped them compete for the league title the next season. In February 2008, Micoud scored his 50th Ligue 1 goal in a big 6-0 win. After two seasons, his contract was not renewed, and he decided to retire from playing football.
Playing for France
Even though he was called up many times, Micoud never became a regular starter for the French national team. This was mainly because Zinedine Zidane played in the same position.
He made his debut for France on August 17, 1999, in a friendly match. He was then chosen for the squad that won UEFA Euro 2000. Micoud played in only one game during that tournament, against the Netherlands. He helped set up a goal from a corner kick in that match.
He was also part of the 2002 FIFA World Cup team. He played in the second game, a 0-0 draw, when Zidane was injured. After the World Cup, he was not picked for France for two years. He later publicly shared his thoughts about why he wasn't being chosen, suggesting it might be due to his star sign.
