Who Was John Augustus Wood?
John Augustus Wood was born in Fort William, Scotland. He joined the Bombay Army. This was part of the British Indian Army. He became a captain in the 20th Bombay Native Infantry. Later, he rose to the rank of colonel.
His Bravery in the Persian War
Captain Wood showed incredible courage during the Anglo-Persian War. This war took place in 1856. He was 38 years old at the time. His brave actions earned him the Victoria Cross.
The Attack on Bushire Fort
On December 9, 1856, Captain Wood led his soldiers. They were attacking a fort in Bushire, Persia. His group was at the very front of the attack. Captain Wood was the first person to climb onto the fort's wall.
As soon as he got on the wall, many enemy soldiers attacked him. They fired their guns at him from very close range. Captain Wood was hit by seven musket balls. Even with these injuries, he immediately fought back. He bravely attacked the enemy leader and killed him.
His soldiers quickly followed him onto the wall. They helped him overcome all the enemy resistance. Their bravery helped them win the fight.
A Historic Victoria Cross
Captain Wood's Victoria Cross was very special. It was the first VC ever given to a soldier in a British Indian regiment. The flag that his battalion captured that day is still kept safe. It is a reminder of their victory.
Later Life and Legacy
John Augustus Wood continued his military career. He eventually became a colonel. He passed away on January 23, 1878, when he was 59 years old. His Victoria Cross medal is now kept by the 2 Rajputana Rifles regiment. This regiment is part of the Indian Army.
