John Bowman (born in 1824 or 1825, died July 26, 1899) was an important American lawyer and politician. He served in the Nevada Assembly and even became the Speaker of the Assembly, which is a very important leadership role in the state's government.

John Bowman's Life and Career

Early Life and Moving West

John Bowman was born in Tennessee in either 1824 or 1825. When he was older, he moved from Illinois to California in 1854. He spent most of his time living in El Dorado County, California.

In the early 1860s, Bowman moved again, this time to Washoe City in what was then the Nevada Territory. He was one of the first people to settle in the towns of Austin and Belmont in Nevada.

Becoming a Nevada Politician

On November 3, 1868, John Bowman was elected to represent Nye County in the Nevada Assembly. The Assembly is like a state parliament where laws are made. He was part of the Unionist Party at that time. His term officially began the day after his election.

In November 1870, Bowman was elected again to the Assembly. For this new term, he served as a member of the Republican Party. In 1871, he was nominated to become the Speaker of the Assembly. The Speaker is the leader of the Assembly. However, the Assembly had more members from the Democratic Party, so Bowman lost the vote to his opponent.

Serving as Speaker of the Assembly

John Bowman was re-elected to the Assembly for a third time in November 1872. During the 1873 session, he was finally chosen to be the Speaker of the Assembly. This was a big achievement!

His third and final term in the Assembly ended in November 1874. Bowman had served in the Assembly for three regular sessions. In the elections that same year, he ran for Lieutenant Governor of Nevada. However, he was defeated by his opponent, Jewett W. Adams.

Later Years and Legacy

In 1877, John Bowman moved from Belmont to Reno, Nevada. He lived there for the rest of his life. On November 5, 1878, he was elected as the district attorney for Washoe County. A district attorney is a lawyer who works for the government to prosecute crimes. He held this job for two years.

John Bowman passed away on July 26, 1899, at the age of 74. He had been sick for about two months and had suffered from asthma for several years. He had a wife and two children, a son and a daughter. Bowman was also a member of the Odd Fellows, which is a friendly society.
