John Carroll University (JCU) is a private university in University Heights, Ohio. It is run by the Jesuits, a Catholic religious order. JCU is located in a suburb of Cleveland. It mainly focuses on liberal arts education for students working on their first college degree. The university has about 3,650 students. It was started in 1886 as St. Ignatius College. Later, in 1923, it was renamed after John Carroll.

History of John Carroll University
John Carroll University was founded in 1886. It was started by the Society of Jesus, also known as the Jesuits. Its first name was St. Ignatius College. It was named after Ignatius of Loyola. At first, it was a college only for men. It has been teaching students and giving out degrees ever since. JCU is one of 28 Jesuit colleges and universities in the United States.
In 1923, the college changed its name to John Carroll University. This was to honor John Carroll. He was the first archbishop of the Catholic Church in the United States. He also started Georgetown University. In 1935, the university moved to its current location in University Heights. This suburb is about 10 miles (16 km) east of downtown Cleveland. The high school that was part of the original college kept the old name. It is now Saint Ignatius High School.
During World War II, John Carroll helped the U.S. Navy. It was one of many colleges that took part in the V-12 Navy College Training Program. This program helped students become Navy officers.
In 1968, the university started admitting women. This meant it became a fully coeducational school. In recent years, JCU has built many new parts. In 2003, the Dolan Center for Science and Technology opened. It is a large science building. It was named after Charles Dolan, who started Cablevision and HBO. He and his wife met while they were students at JCU.

In 2017, the university announced a big change. It named its first president who was not a Jesuit priest. His name is Michael D. Johnson. He started his job on July 1, 2018.
Academics and Learning at JCU
John Carroll University has two main schools. These are the College of Arts and Sciences and the Boler College of Business. Each school offers different study programs. All students must take a set of required classes. These classes include topics like Jesuit history, philosophy, religious studies, and social justice. Students also take classes that help them learn about the world.

Boler College of Business
In 2018, the Boler Family Foundation gave a large gift to the university. This led to the creation of the John M. and Mary Jo Boler College of Business. This college now has two new schools. John Carroll University also offers programs for students who want to continue their education after their first degree. The Boler College of Business has three graduate programs. Students can earn a Master of Science in Accountancy or an MBA. The College of Arts and Sciences also offers many graduate programs.

JCU has many programs for students to study in other countries. The university runs some of its own programs. It also works with other Jesuit universities. Students can study in places like Japan, Germany, and England. There are also programs in London, Vatican City, and El Salvador.

- Forbes magazine chose JCU as one of its Best Value Schools in 2016.
- The Boler School of Business was ranked No. 1 in the nation by Bloomberg Businessweek in 2016. This was for how well its graduates were prepared for work.
- JCU has been recognized for its commitment to community service. It has been named to the President's Higher Education Community Service Honor Roll many times.
Campus Life and Buildings
The John Carroll campus has more than twenty main buildings. Most of them look like old English college buildings. The campus also has sixty acres of green space. The main administration building, Saint Ignatius Hall, has a tall tower called Grasselli Tower. It looks a lot like the English royal palace Hampton Court.

There are over 100 student groups at John Carroll. Many of these groups focus on helping the community. This can be the local Cleveland area or the wider world.

John Carroll University has fraternities and sororities. These are social groups for students. They are approved by the university and follow certain rules.
University Organizations
The Center for Service & Social Action helps students get involved in social justice. Students can do service as part of their classes or as volunteers. Many JCU students choose to help others during their time at the university.
Housing on Campus
Most students at John Carroll live on campus. Over 60% of all students live in one of the seven residence halls. About 90% of first-year and second-year students live on campus.
Athletics and Sports
John Carroll has 23 different sports teams. The school colors are blue and gold. The teams are called the Blue Streaks. JCU teams play in NCAA Division III. They have been part of the Ohio Athletic Conference since 1989.
The university's football, lacrosse, and soccer teams play in Don Shula Stadium. This stadium is named after Don Shula. He was a very famous NFL coach who studied at JCU. Other famous alumni, like London Fletcher, also helped build the stadium.
In 1974–75, the wrestling team won a national championship. The football team has reached the national semifinals twice. In 2016, the football team beat the University of Mount Union. This ended Mount Union's record of 112 straight regular season wins.
Many individual athletes from JCU have won national championships. These include 16 in wrestling and several in track & field, diving, and swimming.
The Men's and Women's Swimming and Diving team has won 7 straight conference titles. The men's tennis team won six straight conference titles. The Men's Lacrosse program has won 6 straight conference championships.
The JCU men's basketball team won their conference titles in 2018. Since joining the conference, John Carroll has won more regular season titles in men's basketball than any other school.
