John Cartier's Early Adventures

John Cartier first went to India to work for the British East India Company. He started as a "writer," which meant he handled important documents and business. In 1756, while working in Dacca, he had to leave quickly. He joined other people who were also fleeing to Fulta.

There, he met Clive of India, a famous British general. Cartier helped Clive take back control of Bengal. The leaders of the British East India Company were very happy with his efforts. After the Battle of Plassey, Cartier's career grew quickly. In 1761, he became the main leader of the Dacca trading post. By 1767, he was the Second in command on the Calcutta Council, a very important position.

Leading Bengal

On 26 December 1769, John Cartier became the new Governor of Bengal. He took over from Harry Verelst. Cartier was governor during a very difficult time, known as the Bengal famine of 1770. This was a period when many people in Bengal did not have enough food.

During this crisis, Cartier used a large store of grain to help. He managed to feed fifteen thousand people every day for several months. The leaders of the British East India Company wanted to understand the situation better. They sent a special group of three people to Bengal. Sadly, their ship was lost at sea. Because of this, the Company decided to call Cartier back to Britain. Warren Hastings was chosen to take his place. Hastings became the new Governor on 28 April 1772.

Later Years and Legacy

After returning to Britain, John Cartier took on new roles. In 1789, he became a High Sheriff of Kent. This was a special job where he helped manage legal matters in the county of Kent.
