Dr. John Harold Cascaden was an important doctor and political leader in Ontario, Canada. He was born on December 3, 1840, and passed away on August 31, 1904. Dr. Cascaden served as a member of the Legislative Assembly of Ontario for the area of Elgin West. He was part of the Liberal political group from 1879 to 1886.
Early Life and Education
John Harold Cascaden was born in a place called Ballintra in County Donegal, Ireland. This was on December 3, 1840. When he was about 10 years old, in 1850, his family moved to Bruce County, which was then known as Canada West.
He went to the University of Toronto to study medicine. In 1863, he earned his degree as a Doctor of Medicine (M.D.). He also continued his medical studies in London, England, at the Royal College of Physicians.
Family Life
Dr. Cascaden was married twice. His first wife, Catherine Ferguson, passed away in 1871. The next year, in 1872, John Cascaden married Hannah Katherine Decou.
John and Hannah had five children together. Their children were David Arthur (born 1874), Annie May (born 1875), John Harold (born 1879), Douglas Jerald (born 1881), and Gordon L. (born 1884).
Public Service and Later Years
Besides being a doctor, John Cascaden also worked as a coroner for Elgin County. A coroner is a public official who investigates deaths that are sudden, unexpected, or suspicious.
Dr. John Cascaden passed away on August 31, 1904. He was buried in the cemetery of St. Stephen's Anglican Church. This church is located in Dunwich, which is in Elgin County, Ontario.
