His Family Background

John Cranstoun was the son of William Cranstoun, 1st Lord Cranstoun, who was also a very important person. His mother was Sarah Cranstoun. Her father, Sir John Cranstoun, was the last male from an older branch of the Cranstoun family.

Owning Important Estates

Even when his father was still alive, John Cranstoun started to gain his own lands. On June 30, 1619, he received official documents, called a charter, for lands like Denholm and Fowlersland. These lands were for him and his first wife.

Later, on April 23, 1623, he and his second wife were granted an annuity. This was a yearly payment from lands such as Smailholm and Wauchope.

Becoming the 2nd Lord Cranstoun

After his father died in 1627, John Cranstoun became the 2nd Lord Cranstoun. He then received more official documents for many other lands. These included Aldingston and Dodes in Berwickshire, and Smailholm, Crailing, and Cranstondaw. He also gained control of the main Cranstoun area, known as the barony of Cranstoun.

On January 17, 1638, he was given an important job. He became the coroner for Roxburghshire. A coroner was a public official who investigated deaths, especially if they were sudden or unusual.
