John Ericson (born September 25, 1926 – died May 3, 2020) was an actor from Germany and America. He was well-known for playing a main role with actress Anne Francis. They starred together in the TV show Honey West from 1965 to 1966.
Early Life and Training
John Ericson was born in Düsseldorf, Germany. His mother, Ellen Wilson, was a Swedish actress and opera singer. His father, Carl F. Meibes, later became the head of a food company in New York.
His family moved from Germany to the United States. They left to escape the growing power of the Nazi government at that time. John Ericson studied acting at the American Academy of Dramatic Arts in New York City. Famous actors like Grace Kelly, Jack Palance, and Don Rickles were in the same class as him.
Acting Career
John Ericson started his acting career in local theater groups. He performed at places like the Gateway Theatre in Gatlinburg, Tennessee, and the Barter Theatre in Abingdon, Virginia. He also acted on Broadway, which is a famous theater district in New York City. In 1951, he was in the first production of the play Stalag 17.
In the 1950s, Ericson made several movies with MGM, a big film studio. His first movie was Teresa in 1951. He also appeared in films like Rhapsody, The Student Prince, and Green Fire, all released in 1954. He was also in Bad Day at Black Rock (1955). In 1957, he co-starred with Barbara Stanwyck in the movie Forty Guns. He played Sheriff Barney Wiley in the Western film Day of the Badman (1958).
For the next 30 years, Ericson mostly worked in television. He played the main character in an episode of the CBS show The Millionaire. He also appeared with Dorothy Malone in an episode of Appointment with Adventure. Ericson was a guest star on many popular TV shows. He appeared twice on the Western series Bonanza. From 1965 to 1966, he was a co-star in Honey West with Anne Francis. They had played brother and sister in the movie Bad Day at Black Rock. In 1971, he appeared in an episode of The Men From Shiloh.
Ericson also continued to act in movies. He played the main role in Pretty Boy Floyd (1960). Other films he appeared in include Under Ten Flags (1960), 7 Faces of Dr. Lao (1964), Bedknobs and Broomsticks (1971), and Crash! (1976). His last film role was in The Far Side of Jericho in 2006.
Personal Life and Death
John Ericson was married two times. He had two children with his first wife, Milly Coury. He was married to his second wife, Karen Huston Ericson, for more than 45 years. John Ericson passed away on May 3, 2020, at the age of 93. He died from pneumonia.
