Kids Encyclopedia Facts

John Finglow (died 8 August 1586) was an English Roman Catholic priest. He is known as a martyr in the Catholic Church, which means he died for his religious beliefs. He was declared "blessed" (or beatified) in 1987.

Early Life and Education

John Finglow was born in a place called Barnby, near Howden in Yorkshire, England. In December 1573, he began studying at Caius College, Cambridge, which is a famous university.

Later, he traveled to the English College in Reims, France, on February 9, 1580. This college was a special school for English Catholics who wanted to become priests during a time when it was difficult to study for the priesthood in England.

Becoming a Priest and Mission

John Finglow became a priest on March 25, 1581. About a month later, on April 24, he was sent back to England. His mission was to serve the Catholic community there, which was challenging due to the religious laws at the time.

He worked as a priest in the northern parts of England for about five years. During this time, he helped people practice their Catholic faith.

Arrest and Legacy

Eventually, John Finglow was arrested and held in a prison called Ousebridge Kidcote in York. He was put on trial for being a Catholic priest and for helping English people return to the Catholic Church. For these actions, he was sentenced to death for his beliefs. He died on August 8, 1586.

John Finglow is remembered as one of the many people who faced great danger for their faith during that period in English history.
