O'Sullivan received the Medal of Honor for his courage. This is the highest award a soldier can get in the United States. He earned it for his actions against a group of Native Americans in Texas on December 8, 1874.

Life and Military Service

John Francis O'Sullivan was born in County Kerry, in southern Ireland, in 1850. He later moved to the United States. On March 22, 1870, he joined the U.S. Army in New York City, New York.

O'Sullivan became a soldier in the 4th U.S. Cavalry. This unit was involved in conflicts known as the Texas-Indian Wars during the 1870s. These were a series of fights between the U.S. Army and Native American groups in Texas.

Earning the Medal of Honor

On December 8, 1874, O'Sullivan was part of a small group of cavalry soldiers. They were chasing ten Native Americans through the Muchague Valley. During the chase, the Native Americans suddenly stopped. They got off their horses and prepared to fight the soldiers.

Private O'Sullivan and another soldier, Private Frederick Bergendahl, showed great bravery in this fight. After most of the Native Americans were defeated, O'Sullivan continued to chase the last one. However, he was not able to catch him.

For their courage in this battle, both Private Bergendahl and Private O'Sullivan received the Medal of Honor. Lieutenant Lewis Warrington also received the award. They were given this high honor on October 13, 1875.

Later Life and Legacy

After leaving the military, John Francis O'Sullivan returned to New York. He passed away on May 19, 1907, when he was 57 years old. He was buried at Calvary Cemetery in Queens, New York.

A special marker was put up to remember him. This marker is located at the Fort Concho National Historic Landmark in San Angelo, Texas. It honors his service and bravery.
