John Goff Ballentine (May 20, 1825 – November 23, 1915) was an important American politician and a military officer. He served in the United States House of Representatives for Tennessee and was a colonel in the Confederate States Army during the American Civil War.

Early Life and Education
John Goff Ballentine was born on May 20, 1825. His hometown was Pulaski, Tennessee, in Giles County. His parents were Andrew Mitchell and Mary Tuttle Goff Ballentine.
He received a good education during his youth. He graduated from Wurtemberg Academy in 1841. Later, he attended the University of Nashville, finishing his studies there in 1845. He then went on to study law at Harvard University, completing his law degree in 1848.
After his studies, Ballentine became a faculty member at Livingston Law School in New York. He then began his career as a lawyer, practicing law in his hometown of Pulaski.
Career Highlights
Around 1854, John Goff Ballentine moved to Panola County, Mississippi. There, he continued his work as a lawyer. He also became involved in managing large family farms.
While in Mississippi, he met and married Mary E. Laird. She was the daughter of Dr. Henry Laird of Belmont. John and Mary had four children together. In 1860, the family moved to Memphis, Tennessee.
Service in the Civil War
During the American Civil War, John Goff Ballentine served in the Confederate States Army. He held the rank of colonel. After the war ended, he returned to Pulaski, Tennessee.
Political Career
Ballentine was a member of the Democratic Party. He was elected to the United States House of Representatives. He served two terms in Congress, from March 4, 1883, to March 3, 1887.
In 1886, he decided not to run for re-election. After his time in Congress, he retired from public life and his active pursuits.
Later Life and Death
John Goff Ballentine lived to be 90 years old. He passed away in Pulaski, Tennessee, on November 23, 1915. He was laid to rest at the New Pulaski Cemetery in his hometown.
