John H. Brown (born 1842, died 1898) was a brave soldier from the United States. He fought in the American Civil War with the 47th Ohio Infantry. He earned the Medal of Honor, which is the highest award for bravery in the U.S. military. Biography

Early Life and Military Service

John Brown was born in Boston, Massachusetts in 1842. When the American Civil War began, he decided to join the army. He enlisted with the 47th Regiment Ohio Volunteer Infantry in Cincinnati, Ohio.

The 47th Ohio Infantry was part of the Union Army. They fought in many important battles. John Brown showed great courage during his time as a soldier.

Bravery at Vicksburg

One of the most famous events in John Brown's military career happened during the Battle of Vicksburg. This battle took place in Mississippi in 1863. Vicksburg was a very important city for the Confederacy. Capturing it was a major goal for the Union.

During the battle on May 19, 1863, John Brown performed an act of incredible bravery. This act earned him the Medal of Honor. The Medal of Honor is the highest military award given for courage. He received this honor on August 24, 1896.

Life After the War

After the war ended, John Brown returned home. He married Latvian B. Davis, who was from Cincinnati, Ohio. They started a family together.

By 1870, John Brown was working as a letter carrier for the U.S. Postal Service. He lived in Cincinnati with his wife, Latvian, and their daughter, Lillie. Later, they had another daughter named Grace Ella.

John Brown passed away on August 7, 1898. He was buried at the Spring Grove Cemetery in Cincinnati, Ohio.
