The John Hancock Warehouse is a very old building located at 136 Lindsay Street in York, Maine. It was built a long time ago, in the 1700s! This small warehouse is special because it was once connected to John Hancock, a famous politician from Massachusetts. It's actually the oldest known business building in the whole state of Maine. The warehouse was added to a list of important places, the National Register of Historic Places, on December 2, 1969. Today, it's a museum that belongs to Museums of Old York, where people can visit and learn about its history.

Exploring the Historic Warehouse
The Hancock Warehouse sits on the north side of the York River. It's just a short distance east of the Sewall Bridge. This bridge carries Seabury Road over the river.
What the Warehouse Looks Like
The building is a rectangular shape. It has two and a half stories and is made of wood. It measures about 26 feet by 24 feet and stands about 40 feet tall. The roof has two sloping sides, which is called a gable roof. The outside is covered with wood shingles.
Inside, the building shows how it was built long ago. It has strong, rough-cut wooden beams. These beams are joined together using a special method called mortise and tenon joints. Wooden pegs hold them in place. You can reach the second floor by an inside staircase or an outside ramp. There's even a working wheel inside! This wheel was used to help move goods between the different floors.
The Warehouse's Connection to John Hancock
This warehouse was built in the middle of the 1700s. By the late 1760s, parts of it were owned by John Hancock. He was a very important person in American history. He was a politician and merchant from Massachusetts. This warehouse was part of his large business network. He owned many warehouses along the coast of Maine.
It's not clear if John Hancock ever visited this specific warehouse himself. He had a business partner named Joseph Tucker who managed things. However, Hancock might have visited in 1791. He came to York to see his old friend, Jonathan Sayward. Sayward lived nearby in the Sayward-Wheeler House. After John Hancock passed away, his family sold his share of the warehouse to Joseph Tucker.
