Sir John Herkless (born August 9, 1855 – died June 11, 1920) was an important Scottish writer and teacher. He was the Principal and Vice Chancellor of the University of St Andrews from 1915 to 1920. He also led the United College of St Salvator and St Leonard. He was knighted in 1917, which means he received a special honor from the King. Sir John wrote several books, mostly about church history.

Early Life and Education

John Herkless was born in Glasgow, Scotland, in 1855. His father, William Herkless, was an engineer. John went to the High School of Glasgow for his early education. After that, he attended the University of Glasgow.

While at university, he studied many subjects, including arts and medicine. He really liked philosophy but wasn't a big fan of mathematics. He left the university without earning a degree. Later, he decided to study to become a minister in the church.

A Career in Teaching and Ministry

After his studies, John Herkless started lecturing on English Literature at Queen Margaret College in Glasgow. He also worked as an assistant minister at a church. In 1883, he became the minister for the parish of Tannadice in Angus.

Sir John Herkless also became a professor. He taught Ecclesiastical History at the University of St Andrews. This role meant he taught about the history of the church.

Important Books and Hobbies

During his life, Sir John Herkless wrote several books. One of his well-known books was The Archbishops of St Andrews, which he wrote with Robert Hannay. He also wrote Francis and Dominic and the Mendicant Orders.

When he wasn't working, Sir John enjoyed playing golf. He was a member of The Royal and Ancient Golf Club of St Andrews, a very famous golf club. He passed away in Dundee on June 11, 1920.
