John James Gardner (born October 17, 1845 – died February 7, 1921) was an important American politician. He was a member of the Republican Party. He served as a representative for New Jersey in the United States House of Representatives. He also served as the Mayor of Atlantic City, New Jersey.

John James Gardner's Early Life

John James Gardner was born in Atlantic County, New Jersey. He went to local schools and later studied law. He attended the University of Michigan Law School in 1866 and 1867.

During the American Civil War, he joined the army. He served in the 6th New Jersey Volunteer Infantry from 1861 to 1865. After the war, he worked in real estate and insurance.

John James Gardner's Political Career

Gardner started his political journey in Atlantic City, New Jersey. In 1867, he was elected as an alderman. An alderman is a local official who helps govern a city.

He then became the Mayor of Atlantic City. He served two terms as mayor, first from 1868 to 1872 and again from 1874 to 1875. In 1876, he also worked on the common council and as a coroner for Atlantic County.

From 1878 to 1893, Gardner was a member of the New Jersey Senate. This is a part of New Jersey's state government. In 1883, he was even chosen to be the president of the New Jersey Senate. He also spent some time working in agriculture. In 1884, he was a delegate to the 1884 Republican National Convention. This is a big meeting where the Republican Party chooses its candidate for president.

Serving in Congress

John James Gardner was elected to the United States House of Representatives. He was a Republican. He served for ten terms, from March 4, 1893, to March 3, 1913. The House of Representatives is where laws are made for the entire country.

While in Congress, he was the chairman of the Committee on Labor. This committee worked on issues related to workers and jobs. He tried to get re-elected in 1912 but was not successful. After leaving Congress, he went back to farming.

John James Gardner's Death

John James Gardner passed away on February 7, 1921. He died from heart disease at his farm in Indian Mills, New Jersey, which is in Shamong Township, New Jersey. He was buried in the Atlantic City Cemetery in Pleasantville, New Jersey.
