Early Life and Family
John Jebb was born in Mansfield, Nottinghamshire, England. His father, Samuel Jebb, was a successful brewer. John was one of four sons. His brothers included Samuel Jebb, who became a doctor. Samuel's son, Sir Richard Jebb, 1st Baronet, later became a doctor to the Royal family. Another brother, Richard, moved to Ireland and had many notable family members.
Education and Church Roles
John Jebb studied at Peterhouse, Cambridge University. After his studies, he became a Chaplain to William Cavendish, 4th Duke of Devonshire. This was an important role, advising a powerful duke.
He held two major positions in the church until his death in 1787. From 1740, he was the Treasurer of Christ Church Cathedral, Dublin. Later, in 1769, he also became the Dean of Cashel.
Family Life
John Jebb married Anne Gansel. Her father was David (or Daniel) Gansel from Donnyland House in Colchester. John and Anne had two sons. One son was named David. Their other son, John Jebb, became a well-known political and social reformer. He was also a clergyman, known for his different religious ideas.
Notable Relatives
John Jebb had a grandnephew who was also named John Jebb. This younger John Jebb was the grandson of John Jebb's brother, Richard. The grandnephew became a very important church leader. He served as the Bishop of Limerick, Ardfert and Aghadoe from 1823 to 1833.
