John Joseph Scanlan (born May 24, 1906 – died January 31, 1997) was an important leader in the Catholic Church. He was a bishop in Hawaii, serving the Diocese of Honolulu from 1968 to 1981. Before that, he was an auxiliary bishop in the same area from 1954 to 1968.
About Bishop Scanlan
His Early Life
John Scanlan was born in Inniscarra, County Cork, Ireland, on May 24, 1906. He studied to become a priest at All Hallows College in Dublin. On June 22, 1930, he became a priest in Dublin. He was ordained for the Archdiocese of San Francisco.
After becoming a priest, Scanlan worked in churches in Oakland, Berkeley, and San Jose. He also led a group called the Archdiocesan Council of Catholic Men. Plus, he taught religion in high school.
Becoming a Bishop
On July 8, 1954, Pope Pius XII chose Scanlan to be an auxiliary bishop for the Diocese of Honolulu. An auxiliary bishop helps the main bishop. He officially became a bishop on September 21, 1954.
Later, on November 10, 1967, Scanlan was asked to manage the diocese. Then, on March 6, 1968, Pope Paul VI appointed him as the main bishop of the Diocese of Honolulu.
Bishop Scanlan retired on June 30, 1981. Even after retiring, he stayed active as a bishop emeritus. John Scanlan passed away in San Rafael, California, on January 31, 1997.
