John L. Withers II is an American politician and diplomat born in 1948. He is known for his work representing the United States in different countries around the world. He served as the U.S. Ambassador to Albania.

Early Life and Education
John L. Withers II was born in 1948. He attended Harvard University and graduated in 1971 with a degree in History. He continued his studies at McGill University, earning a Master's degree in East Asian Studies in 1975. In 1983, he received a Doctor of Philosophy degree from Yale University. His advanced degree focused on Modern Chinese History.
Working for His Country
After finishing his education, Mr. Withers began a career in the Foreign Service in 1984. This means he worked as a diplomat for the United States government. His first job was in The Hague from 1985 to 1986, where he worked as a political officer.
He later had many other important jobs as a diplomat. He worked in countries like Nigeria, Russia, and Ireland. These roles involved representing the United States and working with leaders in those nations.
Ambassador to Albania
In August 2007, President George W. Bush chose John L. Withers II to be the Ambassador to Albania. An ambassador is the highest-ranking diplomat who represents their country in another nation. Mr. Withers served in this important role until November 10, 2010. He was then replaced by Alexander Arvizu.
