John Light Atlee was an important American physician (a doctor) and surgeon (a doctor who performs operations). He lived from 1799 to 1885. He helped start a big group for doctors called the American Medical Association. He even became its leader!

Early Life and Education

John Light Atlee was born in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania. His father was Colonel William Pitt Atlee.

John went to medical school at the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine. He finished his studies in 1820. After that, he opened his own doctor's office in Lancaster. People quickly noticed how good he was as a surgeon.

A Life in Medicine

Dr. Atlee was very active in the medical community. He helped create the Lancaster County Medical Society in 1843. He also helped start the Pennsylvania State Medical Society in 1848.

He was a key person in setting up the American Medical Association (A.M.A.) in Philadelphia. This is a very important group for doctors in the United States. In 1868, he became a vice president of the A.M.A. Later, in 1882, he served as its president.

Dr. Atlee also taught students. He was a professor of anatomy at Franklin and Marshall College. Anatomy is the study of the body's structure. Today, a building at the college is named after him.

John Light Atlee passed away in Lancaster in 1885.
