John Lockwood was an English Catholic priest who lived a long time ago. He was born around 1555 and died on April 13, 1642, in York, England. He is remembered as a Catholic martyr, which means he died for his religious beliefs. In 1929, the Catholic Church officially recognized him as "Blessed."

Early Life and Education
John Lockwood grew up in Yorkshire, England. He was the oldest son of Christopher Lockwood. His mother was Clare Lascelles.
In 1579, John and his younger brother, Francis, traveled to Reims, France. From there, John went to Douai College. This college was a special school for English Catholics. He studied philosophy there.
Becoming a Priest
John Lockwood continued his studies for many years. On October 4, 1595, he entered the English College, Rome. This was another important school for English priests.
He became a priest on January 26, 1597. A few months later, in April 1598, he was sent back to England. His mission was to serve the Catholic community there.
Life as a Priest in England
Being a Catholic priest in England during John Lockwood's time was very difficult. The government often made it illegal to practice Catholicism. Priests faced great danger.
John Lockwood was arrested and put in prison. In 1610, he was forced to leave England. This was called banishment.
Return and Final Capture
Even after being banished, John Lockwood returned to England. He continued his work as a priest in secret. He did this for 32 more years.
In 1642, he was finally captured again. He was arrested at a place called Wood End in Gatenby. At this time, John Lockwood was about 87 years old.
Martyrdom
John Lockwood was taken to York. On April 13, 1642, he was put to death. He died alongside another Catholic, Blessed Edmund Catherick.
He is remembered as a martyr because he died for his faith. The Catholic Church honors him for his bravery.
