Who Was John Lyon?
John Lyon was born in 1696. He belonged to a very old and important family in Scotland. His family held the title of "Earl of Strathmore and Kinghorne." An Earl is a noble title, similar to a duke or a baron, and it means they were important landowners with special duties and a high rank in society.
Becoming an Earl
When John's father, the 4th Earl, passed away in 1712, John inherited the title. This made him the 5th Earl of Strathmore and Kinghorne at a young age. He was responsible for his family's lands and position in Scotland.
The Battle of Sheriffmuir
In 1715, a big conflict known as the Jacobite Rising happened in Scotland. The Jacobites were a group of people who wanted to bring back the old royal family, the Stuarts, to the throne of Great Britain. They believed that James Francis Edward Stuart, often called "The Old Pretender," should be king.
John Lyon's Role
John Lyon, like many Scottish noblemen at the time, chose to support the Jacobite cause. He joined their army and fought in the Battle of Sheriffmuir on 13 November 1715. This battle was a major clash between the Jacobite forces and the British government's army. It was a very fierce fight, and sadly, John Lyon was killed during the battle. He was only 19 years old.
After the Battle
After John Lyon's death, his younger brother, Charles Lyon, became the 6th Earl of Strathmore and Kinghorne.
