John Montgomery Crebs (born April 9, 1830 – died June 26, 1890) was an important person from Illinois. He was a brave soldier during the American Civil War. After the war, he became a politician. He served in the United States House of Representatives, which is part of the U.S. government.

John M. Crebs was born in Middleburg, Virginia. This was on April 9, 1830. When he was seven years old, his family moved to Illinois. They settled in a place called White County. John went to public schools there. Later, he studied to become a lawyer. In 1852, he passed his exams and started working as a lawyer in White County.

A Brave Soldier in the Civil War

When the American Civil War began, John Crebs joined the Union Army. The Union Army fought to keep the United States together. In 1862, he became a lieutenant colonel. This meant he was a high-ranking officer. He led soldiers in the 87th Illinois Infantry regiment.

Fighting for the Union

John Crebs and his soldiers fought in many important battles. These battles took place in the Western part of the war. He was part of the Siege of Corinth in Mississippi. This happened in early 1862. He also took part in the Vicksburg Campaign the next year. This was a very important fight to control the Mississippi River. Later in 1864, he helped the Union Army take control of Arkansas.

After these battles, he led a group of cavalry soldiers. Cavalry means soldiers who fight on horseback. He commanded them in an area called the Department of the Gulf. He stayed in this role until the war ended.

From Soldier to Politician

When the Civil War was over, John Crebs left the army. He went back to White County, Illinois. There, he started working as a lawyer again.

In 1868, he decided to run for a political job. He was a member of the Democratic Party. He won the election and became a U.S. Representative. This meant he would help make laws for the country.

Serving in Congress

John Crebs served in the U.S. House of Representatives for two terms. His first term started on March 4, 1869. His second term ended on March 3, 1873. He ran for re-election in 1872 but did not win.

Later Life

After leaving Congress, John Crebs continued to work as a lawyer. He practiced law until he passed away. He died in Carmi, Illinois, on June 26, 1890. He was buried in Maple Ridge Cemetery.
