John McGovern (born May 16, 1825 – died November 22, 1888) was a brave soldier from County Cavan, Ireland. He received the Victoria Cross, which is the highest award for incredible bravery given to soldiers in the United Kingdom and Commonwealth countries. It's given for showing amazing courage when facing the enemy.

A Heroic Act: John McGovern's Bravery
John McGovern was 32 years old when he showed incredible courage. He was a private in the 1st Bengal European Fusiliers. This unit was part of the Bengal Army.
His brave act happened during the Indian Mutiny on June 23, 1857. This was a big conflict in India. John McGovern was in Delhi, where fighting was intense.
Saving a Comrade Under Fire
During the battle, John McGovern saw a wounded friend. His friend was hurt and in danger. The enemy's cannons were firing heavily. Despite the great risk to himself, John McGovern acted quickly.
He carried his wounded friend back to their camp. He did this while under very heavy fire. His actions saved his friend's life. For this amazing bravery, he was given the Victoria Cross.
Life After the War
After his time in the army, John McGovern moved to Canada. He settled in Hamilton, Ontario. He lived there for many years.
John McGovern passed away in Hamilton in November 1888. He was remembered for his bravery.
