John Ernest Miller (born May 30, 1941 – died June 5, 2020) was an American professional baseball player. He was a pitcher for the Baltimore Orioles in Major League Baseball (MLB) from 1962 to 1967.
Playing in the Big Leagues
John Miller started his baseball journey when the Baltimore Orioles signed him in 1961. He was an "amateur free agent," which means he wasn't drafted but could sign with any team. He played his first game in the "Big Leagues" (Major League Baseball) when he was 21 years old.
Miller was part of the amazing 1966 World Series championship team. Even though he didn't play in the postseason games, he was still a valuable member of the winning team.
Throughout his career, John Miller had problems with his shoulder. Because of these injuries, his contract was sold to the New York Mets in 1967. However, he never got to play a major league game for them. He spent the rest of that season playing for the Triple-A Jacksonville Suns. Triple-A is one step below the major leagues. After playing one more year in 1968, Miller decided to retire from baseball.
Life After Baseball
John Miller was born and grew up in Baltimore, Maryland. He went to Edmondson High School in Southwest Baltimore. After he stopped playing professional baseball, Miller became a firefighter for Baltimore County.
John Miller passed away on June 5, 2020.
