John Montagu, 5th Earl of Sandwich (born 26 January 1744, died 6 June 1814) was an important British politician. Before he became an Earl, he was known as Viscount Hinchingbrooke until 1792. He was a member of the Tory political party.

Early Life and School

John Montagu was the oldest son of John Montagu, 4th Earl of Sandwich. His mother was Dorothy Fane. He went to school at Eton, a famous school in England. When he was 17, in 1761, he joined the army. He became a captain in the 3rd Regiment of Foot Guards.

His Political Journey

In 1765, John Montagu became a Member of Parliament (MP). An MP is someone elected to represent people in the British Parliament. He first represented a place called Brackley. Later, he represented Huntingdonshire from 1768. He stayed an MP until 1792. That year, he became the Earl of Sandwich after his father passed away.

He held several important jobs in the government:

  • He was a Vice-Chamberlain of the Household from 1771 to 1782. This was a role in the royal household.
  • He was the Master of the Buckhounds from 1783 to 1806. This job involved managing the royal hunting dogs.
  • He was also a Joint Postmaster General from 1807 to 1814. This meant he helped run the postal service.

In 1771, he became a member of the Privy Council. This is a group of important advisors to the King or Queen.

Family Life

Lord Sandwich was married twice. His first wife was Lady Elizabeth Montague-Dunk. They married in 1766. Sadly, Lady Elizabeth passed away in 1768. They had two children:

  • Caroline Montagu, who died in 1782.
  • John George Montagu, Viscount Hinchinbroke, who was born in 1767 and died in 1790.

After Lady Elizabeth's death, Lord Sandwich married Lady Mary Powlett in 1772. She was the daughter of Admiral Harry Powlett, the 6th Duke of Bolton. Lord Sandwich lived at Hinchingbrooke House in Cambridgeshire. He also owned land used for farming.

Lord Sandwich and Lady Mary Powlett had several children, including:

  • George John Montagu, who was born in 1773. He became the 6th Earl of Sandwich after his father died.
  • Lady Mary Montagu, born in 1774. She married John Henry Upton, 1st Viscount Templetown.
  • Lady Henrietta Susannah Montagu, born in 1777. She married Lt. Col Sir William James.

Lord Sandwich passed away in June 1814 when he was 70 years old. His son, George, became the next Earl of Sandwich.
