John Patterson MacLean (born March 12, 1848 – died August 12, 1939) was an American Universalist minister. He was also an archaeologist, meaning he studied old things and ancient cultures. Plus, he was a historian, someone who writes about the past. He was very interested in the history of the Shakers, a special religious group. He learned a lot about them while he was at Ohio State University.

His Education and Career

When he was sixteen years old, in 1864, he started studying at the National Normal University. This school was in Lebanon, Ohio. He continued his studies in 1867 at the Theological School of St. Lawrence University. This school was in Canton, New York. By 1869, he was ready to become a minister.

In 1887, he traveled to the Island of Mull in Scotland. He went there to find information for a book he was writing. The book was called "History of the Macleans." He finished his advanced degree, a Ph.D., in 1894.

John Patterson MacLean passed away on August 12, 1939. He died in Greenville, Ohio. He was buried in Franklin, Ohio, his birthplace.
