Franklin was started in 1796 by General William C. Schenck. The city was named after the famous American, Benjamin Franklin. It officially became a town in 1814. Later, in 1951, Franklin became a city.

One of the very first post offices in Warren County was set up in Franklin in 1805. John N.C. Schenck, who was General Schenck's brother, was the first postmaster. The Franklin Post Office building is still standing today, though in a different spot. It is one of four places in Franklin listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

Growth and Industry

The Miami and Erie Canal was built between 1825 and 1845. This canal followed the Great Miami River right through Franklin. The canal brought a lot of boat traffic, which helped new businesses grow. Soon, Franklin had places for processing pork, making barrels, sawmills, and even a whiskey distillery.

Franklin's first mayor was Dr. Absalom Death. He was chosen at a meeting in a tavern in 1837. Dr. Death later became a director at a medical college in Cincinnati. It's interesting to know that two doctors in Franklin's history have been named "Dr. Death."

By the 1850s, the Franklin area became known for breeding racehorses. A special chestnut-colored horse named Nightingale set a record in 1893. She ran 3 miles in a harness race in just 6 minutes and 55.5 seconds.

A railroad line with a station in Franklin was finished in 1872. The town continued to do well. By 1890, there were five paper-making factories in Franklin. However, the town's economy faced a challenge in 1896 when its only bank had financial problems.
