John Wynford Philipps, 1st Viscount St Davids (born May 30, 1860 – died March 28, 1938) was an important British politician. He was a member of the Liberal Party.

About John Philipps's Early Life
John Wynford Philipps was the oldest son of Reverend Sir James Erasmus Philipps. His father was a vicar in Warminster and worked at Salisbury Cathedral. John had several brothers who also became famous. His brothers Ivor Philipps and Owen Philipps, 1st Baron Kylsant also became Members of Parliament (MPs). Another brother, Laurence Philipps, 1st Baron Milford, also became a Baron.
John Philipps's Education
John Philipps went to Felsted School. After that, he studied at Keble College, which is part of Oxford. He earned a degree in modern history in 1882. Later, he studied law at the Middle Temple. He became a lawyer in 1886.
John Philipps's Political Career
John Philipps was a Member of Parliament (MP) for Mid Lanarkshire. He served in this role from 1888 to 1894.
He left his seat in 1894. However, he returned to Parliament in 1898. This time, he represented Pembrokeshire until 1908. Before he inherited his father's title, he was given a special honour. He became Baron St Davids in the County of Pembroke. In 1918, he received an even higher honour. He was made Viscount St Davids. He was also given the title of Knight Grand Cross of the Order of the British Empire (GBE) in 1922. This was a very important award.
John Philipps's Family Life
Lord St Davids was married two times. His first marriage was on February 14, 1888, to Leonora Gerstenberg. They had two sons together:
- Capt. Hon. Colwyn Erasmus Arnold Philipps (born December 11, 1888 – died May 13, 1915)
- Capt. Hon. Roland Erasmus Philipps (born February 27, 1890 – died July 7, 1916)
Sadly, his first wife, Leonora, passed away on March 30, 1915. Both of their sons died during the First World War. Because of this, they passed away before their father and could not inherit his title.
Lord St Davids married for a second time on April 27, 1916. His second wife was Elizabeth Frances Abney-Hastings. They had two children:
- Jestyn Reginald Austin Plantagenet Philipps, 2nd Viscount St Davids (born February 19, 1917 – died June 10, 1991)
- Hon. Lelgarde De Clare Elizabeth Philipps (born September 23, 1918 – died 1984). She married Colin Charles Evans in 1950. They later divorced in 1967.
