The John Sherman Birthplace is a special old house in Lancaster, Ohio. It's now a historic house museum, which means it's a house kept to show how people lived long ago. This house is famous because two important brothers grew up here: John Sherman and William Tecumseh Sherman.
John Sherman was a very important politician. He helped create a famous law called the Sherman Antitrust Act. His older brother, William T. Sherman, became a famous General in the Union Army during the American Civil War. The museum mostly focuses on General William T. Sherman's life.
This house was named a National Historic Landmark in 1964. This means it's a place recognized for its special history in the United States. The Fairfield Heritage Association runs the museum and offers tours at certain times of the year.

About the Sherman House Museum
What the House Looks Like
The Sherman House is in downtown Lancaster. It's a two-story building made of brick. It has a porch across the front. The house has a style called Italianate, which was popular a long time ago. At the back, there's an older part of the house made of wood.
A Home for Famous Brothers
The wooden part of the house was built in 1811. Judge Charles Sherman, the father of John and William, made it bigger by 1816. This is where both John and William were born and spent their childhood.
General William Tecumseh Sherman became very well-known during the American Civil War. He was a leader in the Union Army. Inside the museum today, you can see furniture and items from the Victorian era. This shows what homes looked like when the General was famous.
John Sherman also did many important things for the country. He worked as the United States Treasury Secretary for President Rutherford B. Hayes. Later, he was the United States Secretary of State for President William McKinley. As a United States Senator, he helped pass the Sherman Antitrust Act. This law was created to stop big businesses from becoming too powerful.
The brick front part of the house was built in 1870. This was after the Sherman family owned it. The house has been a museum since 1951, honoring the family's history.
