Major-General John Shrimpton was an important military leader. He became the Governor of Gibraltar.
Early Military Life
John Shrimpton joined the British Army. He became a Major in a special group called the 1st (Queen's Own) Foot Guards. A Major is a mid-level officer in the army.
In 1693, he fought in a big war known as the Nine Years' War. During this war, he was hurt at the Battle of Landen in a region called Flanders.
Serving in Parliament
Later, in 1701, John Shrimpton also became a Member of Parliament. This means he was chosen to represent the town of Whitchurch in the government.
Governor of Gibraltar
In 1704, the important fortress of Gibraltar was in danger. The French were threatening to attack it. John Shrimpton led 2,500 soldiers to help protect Gibraltar.
Queen Anne of Great Britain suggested that John Shrimpton should become the Governor of Gibraltar. Archduke Charles agreed with her idea. Shrimpton served as Governor from 1704 until 1707.
