John Thomas Wilson (born April 16, 1811 – died October 6, 1891) was an important person from Ohio. He was a soldier, a lawyer, and served in the U.S. House of Representatives. This means he helped make laws for the country.

Early Life and Work

John Thomas Wilson was born in a small village called Bell. This village is in a country area of Highland County, Ohio. When he was a child, he did not go to school for very long. He also did not go to college.

Instead, he worked in different jobs. He was involved in buying and selling goods. He also worked in farming.

Military Service

During the American Civil War, John Thomas Wilson joined the army. This war was a big conflict in the United States. He became a first lieutenant on November 2, 1861. A first lieutenant is an officer rank in the army.

He served in the Seventieth Regiment, Ohio Volunteer Infantry. This was a group of soldiers from Ohio. He was later promoted to the rank of captain. He left the army on November 27, 1862.

Political Career

After his time in the army, John Thomas Wilson became involved in politics. He was a member of the Ohio Senate from 1863 to 1866. The Ohio Senate is part of the state government in Ohio.

He was a member of the Republican Party. He was elected to the U.S. House of Representatives three times. He served in Congress from March 4, 1867, to March 3, 1873.

While in Congress, he led a group called the Committee on Agriculture. This committee worked on issues related to farming. He tried to be re-elected in 1872 but did not win.

Later Life and Legacy

John Thomas Wilson passed away when he was eighty years old. He died in a village called Tranquillity in Adams County, Ohio. He is buried in the Tranquillity Cemetery.

Today, you can visit the John T. Wilson Homestead. This was the home that Wilson built and lived in. It is located in Tranquillity, Ohio.
