John Walkinshaw, 3rd of Barrowfield (born around 1671 – died 1731) was an important Scottish gentleman. He was the father of Clementina Walkinshaw, who had a child with Prince Charles Edward Stuart. This prince, also known as Bonnie Prince Charlie, tried to become King of Scotland in 1745 to help his father claim the throne.

John Walkinshaw's Life

John Walkinshaw was the son of John Walkinshaw, 2nd of Barrowfield and Camlachie. His family followed the Episcopalian Christian faith. He became a very rich merchant in Glasgow. He even helped create the textile areas in a part of Glasgow called Calton.

A Supporter of the Jacobites

John Walkinshaw was a strong supporter of the Jacobites. Jacobites were people who believed that the old royal family, the Stuarts, should be the rulers of Britain. Because of his beliefs, he joined the 1715 rising. This was a rebellion that tried to put the Stuart family back on the throne.

During this rebellion, he fought in the Battle of Sheriffmuir. He was captured and put in prison at Stirling Castle. However, he managed to escape! After his escape, he had to leave Scotland and live in other countries for a while.

Family and Important Events

John Walkinshaw married Katherine Paterson, who was born around 1683. She was the daughter of Sir Hugh Paterson, 1st Baronet. Together, they had ten daughters.

In 1719, John Walkinshaw was with a man called Chevalier Wogan. They helped save Clementina Sobieska. She was a Polish princess who was on her way to marry King James. King James was the father of Prince Charles Edward Stuart.

Princess Clementina was very thankful for their help. To show her gratitude, she became the godmother of John Walkinshaw's new baby daughter. This daughter was born in Rome and was named Clementina, after the princess.

Eventually, the British government forgave John Walkinshaw. He was allowed to return to Glasgow. He lived there until he passed away in 1731.
